East Kilbride Golf Club is a mature, challenging parkland golf course on the edge of East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, Scotland and is the only private golf club in the fast-expanding Lanarkshire town.

A strong, active membership and visiting parties from all over the UK, enjoy the challenge of the mature, tree-lined, parkland course which offers a variety of tough and diverse holes.

We have been in our present Nerston location since the late 1960s and what was a young, immature course has now blossomed into a true and enjoyable test of golf.

Annual Open TRI-AM Competition

Members may be aware of our annual OPEN TRI-AM Competition which this year will be held on Friday 27 August 2010 with the tee reserved from 10.00 to 16.00. TENNENT CALEDONIAN BREWERIES have generously agreed to sponsor the event.

The event is open to all and ladies and juniors can also compete although the maximum handicap limit is 18. Players with a higher handicap can still play but must play off 18. The entry fee is £120 inclusive of VAT for a team of three players who compete in a ‘better ball’ format. The prize fund is likely to be around £1500 with several team and individual prizes to play for. A meal is provided for all participating players.

The TRI-AM competition is one of the major events on our golfing calendar. This year it provides an opportunity to showcase our ambitious plans for our new clubhouse and allow visitor golfers to play our course off the ‘white medal tees’ at a time of year when the course will be in A1 condition. The potential exists therefore to attract new members who might be inclined to join next year. It is important that we all do what we can to support this event, especially this year.

Members are asked to consider entering a team either as individuals or perhaps through their business or employer and inviting non-members to make up the team of three. Entry forms are available on the notice board and further information is available from Hamish Cormack who is leading on arrangements on behalf of the Handicap Committee.

The event is likely to be popular so please get your entry in as soon as possible.

EK Golf Club Championship

The field will be limited to the 60 members with the lowest exact handicaps who are available to play in the two rounds of the Club Championship on Saturday 14 August 2010.

In the event that a member in the first 60 is unable to take part in the Championship then his place will be filled by the next member on the reserve list based on exact handicap order.

The list of the 60 available qualifiers will be finalised immediately after the close of the July Medal and a reserve list will be formed based on exact handicaps and where necessary by ballot, to form a ranked order to fill any withdrawal of any member from within the first 60.

Please bear in mind that positions on the list are likely to change as players compete in competitions prior to the July Medal so assumptions should not be made about the final make-up of the field.

Junior Boys Area Finals
Junior Boys Area Finals Sunday 5th September at Kirkhill Golf Club

Having won their section, East Kilbride Golf Club Junior Boys will play Lanark Golf Club on Sunday 5th September at Kirkhill Golf Club. The winners will play either Mount Ellen Golf Club or Kirkhill Golf Club in the final later the same day. The teams losing the morning ties will contest a 3rd-4th place play off.

The boys have done tremendously well in qualifying for the finals so the support of our members on the day would be greatly appreciated.

Club Championship Results (Gents)
The winner of the Henry Cup was Robert Barnes who scored 72 + 69 = 141
The runners-up were:

Ross Hinshelwood     70 + 72 = 142

Robert is reputed to be the oldest winner of the Club Championship in the history of the club. Congratulations Robert!

A look into the future

THIS is how the new clubhouse at the course will look as the push to replace the old building took another important step forward recently.

Since our clubhouse was destroyed by fire in mid-January of this year, a New Build Committee, working closely with full Council, has been hard at work not only to secure the temporary clubhouse and Professional’s shop but also to push on with the clubhouse rebuild.

This artist’s impression gives a good illustration of how and where the new clubhouse will be situated as we look to get the club in full-facility accommodation as quickly as possible.

Since the fire of January 12, the new build group and Council in general have been working hard to progress the rebuild process with various important stages achieved - such as the completion of our temporary clubhouse and Professional’s shop and the appointment of a design team to take forward the new build proposals.

The new clubhouse will be situated on the site of the former building. The long frontage allows the main social spaces - spike bar, main lounge and dining room - to have an attractive outlook over the golf course and beyond to the Clyde Valley to the east.

With Planning Approval and Building Warrant issues on schedule, it anticipated that the tender documentation will be issued to Contractors in September 2010. Assuming a successful tendering process, and an anticipated Building Warrant approval in October 2010, we would hope to be in a position to commence building work before the Christmas break. Construction time is estimated at around one year which allows for trade holidays during construction and the club’s final fit out and furnishing process.

Remembering the trauma and upheaval of immediate aftermath of the fire, the Captain and Council are delighted at the progress made and are enthused at the prospect of having a new, high- quality clubhouse which will provide a magnificent backdrop and facility to a course which has for long been recognised as one of the best in Lanarkshire.

Merchant's Trophy Draw Made

The draw has been made for this year's Merchant's Trophy and is now on the competition notice board.
Members qualify for this singles match-play tournament by virtue of their scores in the April, May and June medals.
Timings are tight for the first round matches - so it is worth checking to see if you have qualified.

Clubhouse rebuild on schedule
AFTER JANUARY FIRE THE PUSH TO HAVE NEW FACILITIES IS ON TRACK
The Golf Club had the worst possible start to 2010 when a fire totally destroyed the clubhouse and adjacent club steward’s house on the evening of January 12.

Although there is a long way to go until we have a brand new clubhouse, great progress has been made to ensure that life – and golf at East Kilbride Golf Club goes on as close to normal as possible.

We now have a temporary clubhouse operating – fully licensed – and a new catering service starting shortly. Full details of that will be given to members shortly.

The committee dedicated to the clubhouse renewal project has posted detailed plans for the new clubhouse. Council has given unanimous approval for the broad outline of the scheme but member suggestions and observations will be welcomed.

With planning and building approval still to be granted, we would hope that work on the new clubhouse will start early next year with completion and handover another year away.

We will bring more news on this as it develops
